Air Auckland International Airport is the main gateway into the city of sails, and apart from the odd cruise ship that drops anchor, flying is the only practical way of getting here from overseas. Once at the airport you'll probably want to get to the city center. The airbus service which departs approximately every 20 minutes and makes pick ups and drop offs at many major hotels and backpackers, is a good option. Shuttle services also operate from the airport and are reasonably priced at around NZ$20 into the city center. Of course taxis and rental cars are also available.
