| Here are a few things to remember during your time in Auckland. - The warmer months (November to April) are busiest, especially around Christmas. Ski resort towns are obviously busier during the winter months. Its a good idea too book ahead if traveling during peak times.
- New Zealanders do not depend on tips for their income and tips are not expected for normal service, however you may wish to show your appreciation and will likely get a big thank you and a smile.
- If in the bush or at the beach towards evening don't underestimate the discomfort caused by the bite of a tiny sand fly or mosquito. Those little critters can get mighty hungry so make sure you have some mozzy repellent of one type or other.
- If driving make sure you remember to drive on the left side of the road! Stick to the speed limits as speed cameras are standing by to take your picture and send you a nasty bill. Be careful on longer trips and don't get too distracted by the beautiful scenery.
- Be mindful when crossing roads. Especially if you come from a right-hand side driving country, as it can be difficult to get over the "instinct" to look to the left when crossing the road. Be careful to look both ways (a common sense tip anyway).
- Much of New Zealand is off the beaten path. Bring good walking shoes that you can comfortably hike in.
- Do not be fooled by the southern hemisphere sun. It is harsh and it will burn you! Make sure you apply plenty of sun-block even on partly cloudy days, or you'll be eating these words! A hat and sun glasses are a good idea too.
- Auckland and New Zealand's weather is very changeable. Don't be surprised to get four seasons in one day! If you're heading out for a tramp or into the country make sure you check the weather report and have that raincoat handy.
- Bring a decent camera, because some of the scenery you will come across will blow you away!
