Getting to Auckland
Tips for travellers

by taxi Auckland has probably got one of the most over-qualified taxi services in the world. From nuclear physicists to bio-engineers, Indian and Pakistani phd's seem too have a hard time getting their qualifications recognised in NZ. Still, you will always be greeted with a friendly smile and have an interesting conversation on your way to your destination. If traveling shorter distance jump into a cab at the back of the taxi queue and leave the longer fairs for those at the front who have been waiting a while. Some cab companies are cheaper than others, ut they are usually in the same ball park.

by car Depending on your travel needs, hiring a car for a few days may be a good option once you've settled in and want to start exploring further afield. The central city is fairly compact and you can get around fine on foot and using the 'link' bus. However there are a lot of interesting and beautiful places that you might want to explore a bit further out which may be hard to get to with public transport. Driving in nz is on the left side, and roads are well maintained and well marked. Rates for hiring a car are good, however parking in the central city can end up being an expensive exercise. The most common transport in Auckland is by car so be weary of peak our traffic, it can be a bit of a headache at times.

public transport There are a number of ways you can travel around Auckland. The 'link' bus service is a good way to get around the central city area. Buses come around every 10 minutes and are fairly cheap. Travelling further afield the bus network becomes more of a painful experience, with long waiting times and the possibility of complex transfers. There is a free information service on 0800 rideline if you need more info. Rail in Auckland exists, but it is underdeveloped, only travels to a few places and is primarily designed for the suburban commuter. The water fairy and taxi service is great. Jump on a fairy or taxi and travel to a number of interesting places. This is a great way to travel around and take in the views and salty harbour air. Make sure you don't go out in rough seas unless you've got a strong stomach though.
