He did it all for his mum.
An unemployed Hamilton man who drove a stolen car at 170km/h and sped through police roadblocks on New Year's Day was in a rush to "wish his mother a happy New Year", Hamilton District Court heard yesterday.
Tamati Karipa Nathan, 20, unemployed, admitted five charges - unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, possessing an instrument to steal a car, failing to stop for police, reckless driving and theft.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Richard Bennett-King said "
"He drove at 170km/h, and accelerated as police drove alongside him and hailed him with a loudspeaker to persuade him to stop,"
Nathan continued speeding at 150km/h in a 70km/h zone in Huntly, driving on the median strip, over police road spikes and then driving at 150km/h in a 50km/h zone.
"When questioned, the defendant said he just wanted to get to Hamilton to wish his mother a happy New Year," Mr Bennett-King said.
