Driver plays name game and loses

Current Affairs

When police stopped Jay Tarahina Kiwi for driving while disqualified he thought he could avoid trouble by giving a false name.

However, there was an arrest warrant out for the man whose name he gave.

Kiwi, 21, of Tauranga, was disqualified from driving for six months last year, but on March 10 police spotted him driving.

Initially, he gave officers a false name and no identification.

When police checked the name and found an outstanding warrant, they asked Kiwi to check its spelling.

He confirmed the name, so the officers arrested him and took him to the police station.

But when Kiwi realised he was going to be held in custody he gave police his real name, which led to his arrest for driving while disqualified.

In Tauranga District Court yesterday, Judge Russell Callander said Kiwi had chosen the wrong name.

Defence lawyer Glenn Dixon said his client was "not a good liar".

This was Kiwi's third offence for driving while disqualified.

He was released on bail to return to the court for sentencing on April 18.
