Even though it's the middle of summer, snow is falling in Silverdale.
Snowplanet has begun filling its 8000 square meter ski area using a snow cannon imported from Holland.
It will cover the main skiing and boarding area with a base of real snow by converting 1.6 million litres of water to snow over four weeks.
Mr Clarke says Snowplanet is the single largest freezer in the southern hemisphere.
He says the snow is produced during the night and early morning when the temperatures are cooler.
The centre is on schedule to open on March 5 and when it is filled with snow, Mr Clarke says it will be like skiing on a mountain.
"The numbers are strictly controlled on the slopes so everyone can have a good ski without bumping into someone else."
The last time snow fell in Auckland was on July 27, 1939, when a 5cm base of snow was reported on Mt Eden.
