Waiheke Island is a magical little island, only 35 minutes by ferry from the city. Right from the outset your mood is set, with a stunning ferry ride across the sparkling harbour to an enchanting isle. The island has some amazing attractions including award winning vineyards, olive groves and picturesque pasture land. Because its a bit of a way out, you feel as if you've arrived at a new land. Rejoice! You've escaped the hustle and bustle of the city. There are no six lane highways here that's for sure! Life here is lived at a slower and more serene pace. The people are friendlier, there are smiles all around, and the air tastes so fresh and nourishing. The houses and cottages are in small village settings each with its own unique character. Waiheke Island is awesome to come to for a bit of a breather and to revitalise your energy supplies. The island is well prepared to accommodate tourists, with accommodation ranging from private luxury villas to backpackers to home stays. The island is an adventure waiting to happen. Rent a scooter for the day, get yourself a map, and head off exploring. Beautiful gold sandy beaches, amazing bush walks, secret waterfalls amazing vineyards and great food, its all waiting for you to discover. Mountain bike, swim, sail, canoe, bush walk, horse ride, scuba dive or just chill out and soak in the sun and sample the famous local wines. The island is fairly small and easy to get around and about. You'll be hard pressed to get lost, but its a good idea to pick up or print off a map. There are buses that circle the island and a few taxis and rental companies for you to choose from. Mountain bikes and scooters are a great way to get around the island as there is next to no traffic. There are quite a few place to hire these, so there shouldn't be any problem. There are also some amazing art and craft shops here, and some wonderful galleries and art studios that are worth taking the time for. If you feel like getting away for a bit Waiheke is the place to go. Its near the city, yet its a world apart. | | | |
