The Aotea Square is a combination of pavement, gardens and lawns and is a great place to have a coffee and do a bit of people watching. It used to be a favoured place for skateboarders to bust some moves, however they seem to have been chased away by the authorities or someone. Fridays and Saturdays the Aotea Square Markets are on. They offer a range of stalls from Pasifika arts and crafts, to underground designer clothes, hand made jewellery, vinyl and CDs and some pretty good food too. You can have a look at some of their wares between 10am and 6pm. From midday to 2pm on Saturdays there are bands and DJs that add to the vibe and ply their trade. Worth coming down for a look as there are always new and funky stalls that arrive and have some cool stuff. Come down to the Square on market days, or maybe on a sunny day to chill out for a bit. Theres usually a nice little organic coffee stall set up, which comes in handy to satisfy that caffeine urge. Its right next to a starbucks too, so you have a choice; support the big corporate, or lend a hand to the small indy. There are a lot of events that are held in the Square, from street theater, exhibitions, political rallies, to concerts and food and wine fairs. Reminiscent of roman days, it was once even converted into a lake for a special performance! Check the events calendar or the paper for up coming events. | | | |
